Manoel o convidou a estudar pintura e Mondego aceitou o conselho do amigo começando a ter aulas com o aquarelista Waldir Granado, ainda na década de setenta.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 150%;\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"\u003eEm 1980, foi convidado a trabalhar no Jornal do Brasil como ilustrador. Em 1984, aceitou um convite para chefiar o departamento de artes do Jornal o Dia, nessa época Luiz Mondego produzia ilustrações para diversas revistas, fazia cartoons, caricaturas e capas de livro, discos além de desenvolver a produção de seus quadros. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 150%;\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"\u003eEm 1990, foi convidado pelo galerista Paulo Cesar para fazer parte do quadro de pintores da galeria Bourguese. Foi aí que definitivamente Mondego deixou a imprensa e se dedicou inteiramente à pintura.
